Tribute to Dr Ava Kanyeredzi
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Dr Ava Kanyeredzi, a cherished colleague, friend, and founding member of The Black Church Domestic Abuse Forum. Dr Kanyeredzi died on 2nd August 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and commitment to justice that will continue to inspire us for many years to come.
Ava’s work and scholarship broke new ground in exploring the intersections of race, faith, gender, and violence. She was a powerful voice for those too often silenced, and she devoted her career to amplifying the lived experiences of Black women and communities. Her contributions to research, advocacy, and teaching have shaped national conversations about domestic abuse and faith, and she was unwavering in her commitment to change.
As a founding member of our Forum, Ava brought wisdom, integrity, and a deep sense of humanity. She reminded us that addressing domestic abuse within Black church communities is not only about policy or practice, but about restoring dignity, healing, and hope. Her insight, energy, and fierce dedication helped establish this Forum as a space of truth-telling, collaboration, and transformation.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ava will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the way she carried light into every room she entered. She believed deeply in the power of community, and her life reflected her faith in action.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ava’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by her work and her spirit. We give thanks for her life, her vision, and her extraordinary contribution.
Though Ava is no longer with us, her voice will continue to echo through the Forum she helped to build and through the countless lives she touched.
Rest in power, Ava. Your work lives on.
